1987年のエアロスミスのパーマネント・バケーションは個人的にミドルヴィンテージの中では一押しのデザインです。
それはエアロスミスのデザインで連想されるのがメンバーのデザインであったり、スカルやエアロフォース・ワンのデザインであったりする中、このクレオパトラを連想させるような女性であったりとか、エンジェルのデザインという、エアロスミスとしては異色のデザインが連なっていることからです。
クレオパトラと言えば、アイアンメイデンもシンボルキャラクターのエディをスフィンクスに見立てたデザインが同年代にあるので、当時エジプトにインスパイアされた人が多かったんだなと示唆できます。
自分の同年代の友人もエジプトの文化が好きで、考古学者を目指したいというような趣旨を語っていましたし、エジプトの文化もそうですが、自分自身も神々に魅了されました。
それはナスカの地上絵やミステリーサークル、ストーンヘンジと言った、未だ解明されていない謎多い文化がエジプトの中にも渦巻いているので、それに魅了されたアーティストがインスパイアを受け、音楽と融合させてまた新しい魅惑のデザインを生み、それを見た消費者がアーティストのデザインに魅惑されるという「魅惑」の食物連鎖が生じているのです。
The 1987 Permanent Vacation design is one of my personal favorites of the middle vintage.
It’s because Aerosmith’s designs are usually associated with their members, skulls, or Aeroforce One, but this design is a woman reminiscent of Cleopatra, or an angel, which is unique for Aerosmith. It is because of this.
Speaking of Cleopatra, Iron Maiden also had a design in the same year that featured the symbolic character Eddie as a sphinx, suggesting that many people were inspired by Egypt at that time.
